Community Action History
For forty years, Community Action has been helping the low-income gain the necessary skills to become self-sufficient. Created by the Economic Opportunity Act in 1964 under Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, Community Action became the nation's leading anti-poverty organization. The War on Poverty continues today and the spirit of hope is carried on through the work of the more than 1,000 Community Action Agencies across the nation.
Community Action of Nebraska's Role
Nebraska has nine Community Action Agencies, serving all 93 counties with a variety of programs designed to empower low-income families and individuals and make our state a better place to live
Community Action of Nebraska (CAN) is proud to work on the behalf of the nine Community Action Agencies, serving as a bridge between the agencies and State, Federal and private organizations. In addition, CAN coordinates a few statewide programs such as the Nebraska Food Pantry Network and the Low-Income Tax Assistance and Outreach project.
Forty years of making a difference in the lives of thousands of Nebraskans. Our future? Helping people, changing lives. It's a matter of course.
