What is an IDA account?

With the AFI Program, you could receive $4 for every $1 you save for your college education or job training, starting or growing a business, or buying your first home. You could save up to $750 in your IDA account and receive up to $3,000 in match money, giving you a total of $3,750 to invest in your goal!

Am I eligible? To qualify, you must:

  • Have an Adjusted Gross Income not in excess of 200 percent of the Federal Poverty line
  • Have net worth of less than $10,000 (excluding value of primary dwelling and one vehicle)
  • Willing and able to save at least $50 per month
  • Eligible for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Community Action of Nebraska (CAN) administers a statewide matched-savings program titled the Assets for Independence (AFI) Program.  Under the AFI Program for every dollar, an eligible participant saves (up to $750) $4 is placed in what is often referred to as an Individual Development Account (IDA).  Two dollars come from the federal Assets for Independence grant and two from a local source typically a bank or foundation.  Upon successful completion of the program, an individual may make a purchase up to $3,750 (includes participants savings amount and AFI match of federal and non-federal dollars):

   i) as a down-payment on a home,
  ii) to acquire equipment to start a small business, or
  iii) to pay for tuition at a higher education institution.
