Poverty Simulation
Many Nebraskans cannot fully understand the barriers to success that many families face. While poverty can be a single episode in the lifespan of a household, it can also be a long-term effect of single, traumatic decisions and the legacy new generations inherit from their history. While many of us are short of cash on occasion, most of us will never face the concept of poverty.
CAN and the University of Nebraska-Cooperative Extension office have partnered to be able to provide a simulated experience for groups of up to 80 people. This four hour experience provides an opportunity for individuals who have never thought about the consequences of being poor to work through the systemic challenges of transportation, childcare, benefits enrollment and other daily living activities burdened further when the household has a limited income.
In 2007, CAN co-hosted a series of 5 simulations. An upcoming simulation will be held in October at the Blue Valley Community Action Partnership All Staff Day.
